It's aimed at about a 4th-grade reading level. "Twig" himself is a bow tie-wearing cartoon walkingstick, a type of insect. He's the voice of the column and appears at the left in the camera-ready version. "Bob the Bug," Twig's pal, is a bald-headed bug of an unidentified type who doesn't say much but appears in the bottom-right corner. The focus of the column is on science, farming, nature and related topics. What's a skunk cabbage? What's 'mad cow disease'? Why do birds sing? What's ellagic acid?
